- Title
EU expansion: enlarged horizons or false dawn?
- Authors
Sansom, Clare
- Abstract
The article focuses on prospects of the biotech sector of eight new Central European members formally entering the European Union on May 1, 2004. It looks mainly at prospects for biotech in the three largest of the candidate countries: Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Despite enthusiasm and ideas among pundits and administrators alike, and progress particularly in growing the biotech sector in Hungary and raising government spending in the Czech Republic, the funding and morale of researchers remain low and the pace of genuine change seems extremely slow. How funding for science impacts training of the next generation of scientists is a concern throughout the region.
