- Abstract
The syntagmatic compound vena del arca appears in archival documentation of the 18th century included in the Oralia Diacrónica del Español, the only Spanish corpus that counts with medical statements. This compound word has its first appearance in Preclassic Spanish by extension of the metaphor already existing in the medical-anatomical language. It enjoyed vitality during classical and postclassic Spanish along with its equivalent vena basílica. However, it suffered a process of obsolescence in favor of the latter from the professionalization of nineteenth-century medicine. Vena basilica was the preferred option, and this is testified by the consulted documentation and dictionaries. Currently there is no study on the diachrony of these voices, therefore the purpose of this research is to offer analysis on the lexical vitality of these syntagmatic units in the history of scientific Spanish.
