- Title
Dickens's "Pious Fraud": The Popular Press and the Moral Suasion of Fictional Narrative.
- Authors
Valdez, Jessica
- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the book "Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens and of his periodical "Household Words". Particular focus is given to representations of reading and the popular press in his works. According to the author, Dickens was concerned about the moral effects of news presented without a narrative structure to guide readers' interpretations. It is suggested that "Household Words" presented an alternative form of journalism based on narrative.
