- Abstract
Currently, military engineers are required to implement design methodologies able to predict pavement performance based on limited field data. Researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have developed a simplified modeling method, which has been implemented in the design criteria. This method assumes that the materials maintain a constant volumetric module while the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio vary as the element approaches failure. These assumptions prevent collapse of the elements as they approach the fault, forcing the material to fail in shear. This article summarizes the technical approach, including the validation of the method using simulations of laboratory tests conducted on pavement materials and field trials conducted on full scale airport pavement sections. The pavement performance predictions using this method provided a reasonable conformity with the observed efforts under aircraft loads in the field. Based on the results of this study, this method will be used to develop new criteria of military pavement design.
