- Abstract
John L. Heilbron, a renowned scholar and historian of science, passed away in 2023 at the age of 89. He was known for his vast knowledge and expertise in various fields, ranging from the Scientific Revolution to the 20th century. Heilbron was born in San Francisco in 1934 and completed his education at the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his career, he held positions at various universities and received numerous awards for his scholarly works. He authored over 20 books and made significant contributions to the history of physics and astronomy. Notably, he challenged the notion of a conflict between religion and science, arguing that the Catholic Church played a significant role in promoting astronomy. Heilbron's work on Galileo and his research on cathedrals as solar observatories were particularly influential. Heilbron's impact extended beyond his research, as he also organized and promoted research projects and mentored many scholars. His dedication to intellectual work and pursuit of truth will be greatly missed.
