- Abstract
This is a study about the food riots that took place in the Portuguese province of Alentejo during the Great War years. The analysis focuses on the districts of Évora and Beja, using the regional press of the period 1914-1918 as the main source of historical data. The paper has three main goals. Firstly, it shows that the traditional expressions of collective protest (popular riots) had still a remarkable importance in the repertoire of collective action in the early 20th century Portugal. Secondly, it shows that food riots and other popular protests occurred not only in the major Portuguese cities (as was the case with the "Potato Revolution") but also in the inland rural areas. Thirdly, the paper discusses whether or not the labour associations had an active participation in the organisation and spread of these food riots.
