- Abstract
Aim: this study aims to test the correlation between nutritional deficiencies with the use of nutritional supplementation in the Bariatric post-surgery. Materials and Methods: retrospective and cross-sectional delineation study conducted from prospective medical records and questionnaires via e-mail from patients at a clinic from Belém do Pará. Participated 126 patients of both sexes, over 18 years old, with anthropometric data preoperatively and at 3, 6 and 12 months after Bariatric Surgery, with presence or absence of nutritional supplementation, as well as signs and symptoms of nutrient deficiency and gastrointestinal symptoms. The results were tabulated and statistically evaluated by descriptive analysis and the simple correspondence analysis technique, using the Statistic version 6.0 application, using a significance level of 5%. Results: the prevalence of 68.25% female. The percentage of nutritional supplementation was lower after 3 months of surgery (61.11%) and clinical signs of nutritional deficiencies were more frequent during this period, presenting vomiting, alopecia, brittle nails and dry skin. The correspondence analysis indicated that there was significant correlation between the use of supplements with the signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies. Conclusion: the proper nutritional supplementation has shown to be an effective therapeutic measure to prevent risk of nutritional deficiencies resulting from bariatric surgery.
