- Title
'Blessed Is He, Who Has Seen': The Power of Ritual Viewing and Ritual Framing in Eleusis.
- Authors
PETRIDOU, GEORGIA
- Abstract
An essay is presented which examines how things that are seen were perceived by initiates in the ceremony of the Greater Mysteries of Eleusis. It proposes to test the efficacy of developments in art history and visual culture in the study of mystic cults and initiation rites in Eleusis, and investigates the notion of ritual-centered visuality in allowing sacred visions to be seen in the Eleusis. It cites the importance of distinguishing between visuality and vision as a heuristic tool.
