- Title
New Oil in Old Jars Hipponax's Lekythos-Throw and Aristophanes' Frogs 1198-247.
- Authors
STEINER, DEBORAH
- Abstract
The article presents two lekythoi in literary accounts and argue for the possibility of an intertextual relation between the episodes in which they appear. The first episode is Hipponax's treatment of the oil flask as a replacement of the discus where the oil flask-throwing composition is viewed as a programmatic statement of Hipponax's distinctive poetics. The other episode is Aesop's exchanges with this master Xanthus where the empty oil jar gave Aesop the victory against his social superior.
