- Title
Getting in tune with your bowel biofeedback when, how, and who?

- Abstract
Biofeedback is a form of physical therapy and muscle retraining used to improve defaecation, strengthen the anal sphincter complex and tone the levator ani muscles. It involves providing the patient with visual or auditory feedback at the time of pelvic floor and anal sphincter muscle contraction, thus enabling the patient to recognise and replicate appropriate manoeuvres during evacuation. There is a wide variation of methods used to achieve "biofeedback" and much like the diversity and variety of biofeedback programs available, the outcomes also vary greatly. This is a practical guide with the mystery of biofeedback revealed. It will assist in identifying those patients who may benefit from the programme and remove all the concerns about requiring expensive 'bells and whistles' which often deter clinicians from using these techniques.
