Re-emerging from a Hiatus: Migrants and Migration in a Post-Pandemic World.
- Authors
Rajan, S Irudaya
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migration and the subsequent re-emergence of migration trends. The pandemic caused significant disruptions to migration flows, with international migration decreasing by 27% in mid-2020 compared to the previous year. Migrant workers faced various challenges, including wage theft and lack of social security. However, migration trends have since resumed, and remittance flows have remained resilient, with India surpassing $100 billion in remittance receipts. The article emphasizes the need for robust data on migration to understand and address the challenges faced by migrants. The Kerala Migration Survey, which has been conducted for 25 years, aims to provide valuable insights into the effects of migration on households and the socio-economic implications of migration. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of the Migration and Development journal as a platform for migration research and its potential for future expansion.
