- Abstract
This paper analyses, from a behavior-analytic perspective, the implications of psychopathological diagnoses to the formation of subjectivities, which present new demands for behavior-analytic psychotherapy. To that end, we build on a theoretical review of the structure of DSM - Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - in order to establish a critical point of view from the behavior-analytic literature and showcase discussions about this topic in the area of interest. Once this discussion is established, we propose that contemporary consequences of the proliferation of a "culture of diagnosis" produce specific subjective demands for behavior-analytic psychotherapy. We also propose that, beyond the discussion about the use of syndromic or functional diagnoses, it is necessary to invest in a thorough study of this "culture of diagnosis", that may be present regardless of the health professional's use of the diagnosis. This culture involves not only health professionals, but also psychotherapy clients who, having free access to information and social practices associated with health models, suffer a transformation in their subjectivities by ongoing cultural contingencies.
