- Abstract
Recently, ethnobotany has put more interest in documenting the existence of local knowledge about the use of plant medicinal species in urban spaces. With this purpose, an exploratory study was carried out to document the use and knowledge of B. monandra, a recently induced species, in an urban area of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The interest is to recognize if there is knowledge about the plant and if it was differentiated by its use, the age and sex of the interviewee. The 100 interviews were conducted between February and April 2016 in different parts of the city to 50 men and 50 women between 17 and 60 years of age. Regarding age differences: 95% of people with 31 years or more know the plant and while 82% of those of 30 or less know nothing about the plant. 100% of men of 31 years or more know the plant, while 42% of minors do not know it, meanwhile 13% of women of 31 years or more know it and 100% of minors of 30 too. In 19% of people have some knowledge of medicinal use and 58% only know and use the plant for ornamental purposes. Although knowledge about the medicinal use of B. monandra is scarce in the city of Chetumal, it exists and young women and men have different knowledge and interests for medicinal issues in that urban area.
