- Abstract
In this article, the editor discusses several topics related to American Indian Studies (AIS). Historian and anthropologist Jack D. Forbes passed away in February 2011. His contributions to the field of AIS, including a study which helped to instigate the Indian college movement, are discussed. Details related to an AIS paradigm statement drafted by the editor are presented. The editor also summarizes the 12th Annual American Indian Studies Association Conference, held February 3-4, 2011 at Arizona State University. Activist Mike Wilson delivered the keynote address for the conference, in which he discussed tribal planning and governance. Reports within the issue on such topics as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and Native American female leaders are also discussed.
