- Abstract
Djerdap national park is abundant with karst speleological objects suitable to be used as bat roosts. Survey of bat presence and activity in this protected area was conducted from 15th to 18th September 2021, as a part of the Serbian-Romanian transboundary project, funded by the Conservation Leadership Programme. We visually inspected three caves, caught bats with mist-nets at the other three caves, and recorded ultrasound calls of bats at nine sites. Together we have recorded 19 bat species: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. euryale, R. blasii, R. hipposideros, Myotis myotis, M. blythii, M. bechsteinii, M. nattereri, M. alcathoe, Barbastella barbastellus, Plecotus auritus, Eptesicus serotinus, Nyctalus noctula, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. kuhlii, P. nathusii, P. pygmaeus, Hypsugo savii, Miniopterus schreibersii, of which new for National Park and Geopark Djerdap were P. kuhlii, P. pygmaeus, and P. nathusii. We gathered evidence that swarming is taking place in at least two of the caves where the bats were caught. The results of the research activities conducted in the first year of the project are promising -- some new caves important for bats were discovered, and autumn importance for some known caves was confirmed, not only for horseshoe bats, that are our primary conservation goal, but for other bat species sharing roosts with them as well.
