Can a Woman be a Man On Screen?
- Authors
Noe, Denise
- Abstract
The article presents a reprint of the article "Can a Woman Be a Man on Screen," by Denise Noe, which appeared in the journal "The Gay & Lesbian Review." It focuses on a frequently raised question, whether a woman can play the role of a mature man on screen. "National Velvet," of the 1920s, is a typical such movie where actress Elizabeth Taylor disguises as a jockey. A handful of genuinely convincing female-to-male impersonations occurred in 1961's "Homicidal," a William Castle film. Some of these types of roles had been acclaimed by known film critics even though a few of them are average.
