- Abstract
The article presents criticism on the Australian silent films "The Birth of White Australia" and "Trooper O'Brien" in order to explain how U.S. films' depictions of African Americans, whiteness, and the Southern U.S. influenced Australian cinematic depictions of Indigenous Australians. More specifically, the author explains U.S. films' characterizations of African Americans as docile slaves or comedic figures.
