- Abstract
The present paper attempts to offer a comparative analysis of Robert Browning's complementary dramatic monologues, "My Last Duchess - Ferrara"(1994) and "Count Gismond - Aix en Provence" (1994), from the point of view of narratology. After a discussion of the multifaceted significance of the titles, the first few lines of the poems are analysed with respect to their temporal references and the ways in which the strategy of suspense is employed. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the intelligibility of the monologues is complicated by the unreliability of their narrators. This unreliability can also be connected to the auditors' present in the respective dramatic monologues.
