- Abstract
The article discusses the potential of next-generation vaccines for treating substance use disorders (SUDs). SUDs affect millions of people worldwide and have a significant impact on health and social functioning. Traditional pharmacological treatments for SUDs have limited efficacy, leading researchers to explore alternative strategies such as immunotherapies. Vaccine-based immunotherapies, in particular, show promise by eliciting an immune response against the substance of abuse and producing neutralizing antibodies. The development of these vaccines has faced challenges, but recent advancements in vaccine research, such as biomimetic hapten-carrier-adjuvant-integrated molecular vaccines, offer improved performance, stability, and safety. However, concerns about adverse reactions, vaccine effectiveness, ethical implications, and access disparities require further scrutiny.
