DISCIPLINING JEFFERSON: THE MAN WITHIN THE BREAST AND THE RHETORICAL NORMS OF PRODUCING ORDER.
- Authors
Engels, Jeremy
- Abstract
The article focuses on the rhetorical value of a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to Maria Cosway, with whom he was infatuated. The author suggests that the letter demonstrates Jefferson's thoughts on the command of reason in society. An analysis of the style of the letter, in which Jefferson presents an argument between his emotions and his intellect, is provided. A discussion of style as a contextual argument within the content of the conflict is included. The author also looks at how Jefferson's letter in context with his other letters provides insight into the psychology of intellectual and emotional arguments.
