- Abstract
The article discusses the lack of attention given to belowground plant organs and their functions by researchers. It highlights the various functions of these organs, such as resource acquisition, clonal multiplication, and carbon sequestration, that are not well understood due to their belowground position and the difficulty of studying them. The article introduces a special issue of the journal Folia Geobotanica dedicated to belowground plant organs, featuring seven papers from four continents covering a range of topics. These include the role of belowground bud bearing organs in response to disturbance and competition, the diversity of belowground storage and bud bearing organs in different regions, methods for manipulating root architecture, and the discovery of rare and interesting morphological traits. The article concludes by expressing hope that the special issue will inspire further research and interest in belowground plant organs.
