- Abstract
Periploca angustifolia root condensed tannins (PATF) have been proved to exhibit numerous biological activities. The aim of this study was to assess the chemical characterization and the anti Spectroscopy allowed the identification of two condensed tannins as catechin and epicatechin gallate. Furthermore, in vivo study showed that the pretreatment of rats with PATF significantly decreased the levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), increasing the levels of serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). In addition, our result showed that the administration of PATF enhanced SOD, CAT, GPx and decreased MDA and protein oxidation, indicating that anti-oxidation and detoxification can be the pathways for heart protection. The heart prevention action and pretreatment effect PATF on the hyperlipidemia induced oxidative stress was confirmed by the heart histopathology studies in rats.
