- Abstract
The policies carried out by France and Catholic Church towards Catholicism in the Middle-East and in Algeria present many similarities, event if the contexts are differents. Indeed, in Orient, native Christian people exist for centuries, whereas in Algeria, Catholic people are, in the vast majority, Europeans arrived in the 19th century. In addition, in one case, the politic framework is due to the surrenders, in the other case, it is a French department (1848). What were the strategies of the State towards Catholicism in Algeria between 1830 and 2018 and what positions did the Church adopt regarding the State, wether colonial or national? It will be the occasion to examine the so specific links built between the Catholic Church and the State, French and Algerian, from 1830, year of the arrival of the conquerors, to 2018, year of the beatification of the nineteen Catholic martyrs of the so-called black decade.
