- Abstract
This article discusses the case of an 85-year-old woman who developed chorea, a movement disorder, after being hospitalized for severe diabetes, a urinary tract infection, and depression. The woman's neurological examination revealed chorea in her arms, legs, and jaw, and an MRI of her brain showed abnormal T1 hyperintensity. The woman was diagnosed with diabetic striatopathy, a rare complication of diabetes that typically causes hemichorea. The article highlights the atypical features of this case, including bilateral chorea and the development of symptoms after improvement in blood glucose levels. The main treatment for diabetic striatopathy is lowering blood glucose, but additional treatments may be necessary if symptoms persist. The article also mentions the typical imaging finding of T1 hyperintensity in the putamen.
