- Abstract
Metin Textbooks have a very important role in transferring the contents of the curriculum to the students. For this reason, textbooks should be prepared in accordance with certain qualities in terms of some physical properties in addition to the scientific content in order to realize an effective teaching. One of these important qualities is the readability of the textbook. This research was carried out to determine the readability of the texts in biology textbooks taught in secondary education institutions. This qualitative study was used the document analysis method. In the research, Biology 10 textbook for MEB Secondary Education was used as teaching material. In this book, a total of 17 texts were selected from all three units by taking into consideration the issues related to units and the gains mentioned in the curriculum of the Ministry of National Education. The readability number was calculated using by Ateşman readability formula and the level of readability was determined for each of the texts selected. According to the findings, the readability level of the texts was found to be difficult. When the findings were evaluated separately for the units, it was found that the readability level of all three units was difficult. It was founded that the lowest unit of readability was "Basic Principles of Inheritance" and the highest unit of readability was "Ecosystem Ecology and Current Environmental Problems". When the findings were examined in terms of subjects, "sexual reproduction" subject had the lowest readability level, and also the highest readability level was found to be related to "the relationship between the living and nonliving components of the ecosystem". At the end of the study, suggestions were made to improve the readability of textbooks.
