- Abstract
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the main cause of acute flaccid paralysis. It occurs due to an autoimmune process followed by the attack on peripheral nerve structures. It is classically associated with some infections, especially by Campylobacter jejuni. It presents as an acute symmetrical and ascending paralysis associated with hyporeflexia or arreflexia. However, in a considerable number of patients this typical presentation may not occur. We report a case of a 18-year-old female patient who came to our service with atypical loss of strength in the lower limbs without any signs of muscle tone change, diagnosed with an atypical presentation of GBS. After four days of immunoglobulin administration, the patient demonstrated significant improvements in her condition. The case described demonstrates the importance of not excluding the possibility of GBS in atypical cases, so that treatment can be initiated as early as possible, resulting in favorable outcomes and the reduction of morbimortality.
