- Abstract
Aim: describing the medication consumption profile of the elderly population of different Brazilian regions. Material and Methods : bibliographic and descriptive study based on articles collected in databases such as PubMed, LILACS and SciELO. The herein used descriptors were medications and elderly; polypharmacy and self-medication. Priority was given to full articles published in journals with qualis B3 or higher. The current research used original articles from studies conducted in different Brazilian regions, in different counties, and published since 2000. Fifty (50) studies were preselected and 16 were chosen for detailed analysis. Results: the study used 1 article of the Northern region, 2 of the Northeastern region, 3 of the Midwestern region, 4 of the Southern region and 6 of the Southeastern region. The literature review results showed high prevalence of medication use and polypharmacy within the studied group, and it was higher among women. It was observed that anti-hypertensive drugs were the most used medications in different regions of the country. The analyzed studies point out to the practice of self-medication and use of potentially inappropriate medications among the elderly population. Conclusion: The data showed high medication use ratio among the elderly, with similar profiles in the different Brazilian locations, fact that emphasizes the need for continuously instructing the elderly population as well as the caregivers about the risks of using medication and for adopting pharmaceutical assistance measures.
