- Abstract
The increased waist circumference (WC) is known to be associated with arterial systemic hypertension. The aim of this study was to examine relationship between increased WC and hypertension in a hypertensive populational sample of the Hiperdia Program from Iron Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil, via cross sectional analysis study. Exactly 712 hipertensive patients were interviwed, both gender. The subjects had a mean age of 61 ± 13 years. Four hundred and eighty-six (68.3%) were women, 62.6% had systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 28.7% had altered diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Regarding WC, 34.1% of men and 77.7% of women had alterations. The relationship of increased pressure with WC was statistically significant for DBP of female patients. By linear regression analysis for each 1-cm increase in WC, DBP increase 0.13 mmHg. Using multiple logistic regression odds ratio value was 1.42 after adjusted age and gender. The WC and DBP in women are related in this study. We suggest that the WC should be included in models assessing hypertension risks.
