- Abstract
This article discusses the case of a 60-year-old man who experienced a decline in job performance and changes in personality and judgment. The man, an airline pilot, exhibited symptoms such as being easily distracted, tangential, and perseverating on certain topics. He also fell for scams and showed a decline in empathy towards his wife. The man scored within the normal range on a cognitive screening tool, but formal neuropsychometric testing revealed significant executive function impairments and behavioral changes. Structural imaging showed atrophy in the frontal and temporal lobes, confirming a diagnosis of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. The article emphasizes the challenges in differentiating this condition from psychiatric diseases and the importance of addressing safety concerns, such as gun ownership, early in the disease course.
