- Abstract
A recent study on septicemia in neonates at a teaching institute in Jharkhand found that newborn candidemia was present in 22.22% of positive blood culture specimens and 10% of the total sample. While Candida albicans is still the most common bloodstream infection, nonalbicans Candida species are becoming more prevalent, accounting for over 50% of cases. One of these species, Candida auris, is a multidrug-resistant pathogen that has caused deadly infections in hospitals worldwide. There are currently no established guidelines for testing the antifungal susceptibility of Candida auris, making treatment challenging. Although Candida auris was not isolated in the Jharkhand study, it is important to be aware of this emerging strain and use appropriate antifungal treatments.
