- Abstract
The total turnover of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry in Germany decreased by 12.2 percent to 229.3 billion euros in 2023. Production declined by 4.3 percent and the industry's capacity utilization was at 77.2 percent. The weak industrial economy in Europe and competition with China led to declines in sales both domestically and internationally. China became Germany's most important trading partner in 2023. The biotech industry saw an increase in capital raised to 1.08 billion euros. The production of plastics in Germany declined for the second consecutive year. Global production of bioplastics reached 1.8 million tons in 2023, with PLA having the largest share. Packaging was the largest market segment for bioplastics. The Chemical Trade Association in Germany experienced an 18 percent decrease in turnover in 2023 due to declining demand and geopolitical uncertainties. The German paint and ink industry generated approximately 9 billion euros in 2023, with sales of paints, colors, and inks slightly declining.
