- Abstract
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this year was awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten P. Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless. They were honored for their work on the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. Click chemistry enables the connection of molecules regardless of their size and complexity, even in living cells and organisms. Bioorthogonal chemistry allows for selective reactions in the biological system and was developed by Carolyn Bertozzi to label and investigate sugars on the surface of cells. Their work has led to significant advancements in chemical research and is used in various fields such as glycobiology, materials science, and cancer therapy. Carolyn Bertozzi is a respected scientist and mentor who has already trained many young scientists.
