- Abstract
In this article, youth employment strategies and the unemployment rate in EU countries, in Lithuania and in Klaipėda are reviewed. A total of 384 young 18 to 29-year-old respondents, who live, work and study at the present moment in Klaipėda, participated in a social poll on employment and employability opportunities for youth in Klaipėda. The outcomes of the social poll conducted are characterised as qualitative results in the determination of the employment situation and the employability of youth on the labour market in Klaipėda. It was revealed that most young people face the same problems while looking for employment. Firstly, they lack experience in order to get a job. In this case, there is a dilemma at work, since employers want employees with experience, but in order for young people to get experience, they need to have previous work experience. In addition, young employees are offered low salaries, and cannot combine the time schedules of work and studies. Therefore, most young people have experienced unemployment. In particular, young people tend to judge themselves quite harshly, because some of them do not even have the motivation to work or learn, due to the overestimation of their skills. They expect a high salary from the start, but do not want to put any effort into working. A signifiant part of the youth polled complained of inappropriate behaviour by employers during meetings for positions. They were asked to answer personal questions which were beyond the bounds of ethics. The employers in Klaipėda city are quite inactive, because out of 40 questionnaires sent out to various companies about the employment of youth, only four completed questionnaires were returned. Work experience is still a crucial part of looking for a job. In addition, employers value work experience more than the education young people have. Employers estimate the grades in the diploma’s references neutrally.
