- Abstract
Perpetrators of harassment and discrimination in the workplace tend to be motivated by a variety of factors to persecute and abuse their coworkers. Often they are products of a culture, family upbringing, or abusive history that has made that person callous and insensitive to the feelings and rights of others. Some people harass and discriminate against others to fulfill an inner desire for power and control. Others do so because they are afraid of their own inadequacy or weaknesses. Whatever the reason, there is no ethical or moral justification that will excuse abusive behavior Business owners must make sure to take actions and implement strategies to minimize harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Managers must be trained to be aware of what constitutes harassment and discrimination so that they can vigilantly monitor the workplace for possible infractions. Top down, vertical organizational structures encourage superior attitudes among managers that produce more harassment and discrimination cases than horizontal, team-oriented structures. Also, businesses under stress must often rely on aggressive managers that can produce results quickly. Managers in these situations must be careful their aggression does not become illegal harassment and discrimination.
