- Abstract
This article explores the influence of social media on the distribution of research published in the PM&R journal, the official scientific journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The journal implemented a social media strategy in 2017 to enhance its online visibility and engagement with readers. The study examines the social media impact of articles published in the journal from 2009 to 2022 using the Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), which measures online mentions and engagement. The findings reveal a wide range of AAS scores, with the highest-scoring article discussing the underrepresentation of women physicians in recognition awards. This study underscores the potential of social media in promoting research and increasing its influence. The PM&R journal has embraced social media to disseminate reliable information about rehabilitation medicine and raise public awareness of the field. Social media has become increasingly crucial in disseminating research, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alternative metrics like AAS have been developed to gauge the impact of research articles based on online attention. While AAS offers valuable insights into the reach and impact of research beyond academia, it should be used alongside traditional citation counts. Medical journals should continue to explore avenues for promoting the dissemination of research online and combating the spread of misinformation.
