- Abstract
Education plays a fundamental role in empowering citizens, which contributes to their wellbeing and also to the economic development of the country and, when of high quality, of extreme importance for a nation. In Brazil we have educational indicators that seek to measure the quality of teaching in schools, including IDEB and ENEM. There are some factors that determine students' cognitive performance, such as the structure of schools. This work seeks to find relationships between the school structure obtained in the 2015 School Census and its performance, measured by means of the average grade in the ENEM of that same year, of each teaching entity, if they exist and what items with greater influence. After the classification of the variables, it was possible to submit these data for correlation tests through the language of statistical analysis R. The results show a greater correlation between the grades in the ENEM with the existence in the school of access to a public network of water supply as well as a positive correlation when sanitary sewage is through public service and negative network when it is through septic tank. The literature explains this correlation by a higher incidence of infectious, gastrointestinal and neurocognitive diseases in school-aged children exposed to inadequate water and sanitation facilities that would negatively impact students' school attendance. This indicates that a significant improvement in school performance could be achieved simply by extending basic sanitation to schools.
