Peripheral IV Catheters: The New World of Clinically Indicated Replacement.

- Abstract
Evidence-based guidelines now advise the removal of PIVCs only when clinically indicated. This replaces previous guidelines to replace PIVCs every 72-96 hours. Large clinical trials have confirmed the safety of prolonged PIVC dwell times, compared to the use of multiple short-term PIVCs. The challenge now is to tackle other areas where improvements in care can be made to prevent PIVC failure -- the infiltration, occlusion phlebitis, accidental removal and infectious complications that can occur at any stage of catheter dwell and that require PIVC removal before therapy is complete. Our goal should be for each patient to need only one PIVC inserted for each episode of care -- that this PIVC should work flawlessly and painlessly until it is no longer required for therapy. Can we do it?
