- Abstract
Introduction. Readenoidectomy is a procedure of the secondary removal of an adenoid. The problem is not often described in literature, but it quite frequently appears in everyday pediatric otorhinolaryngological practice. Aim. The analysis of health problems and diagnostic results in children who were directed to the hospital to undergo secondary adenoidectomy. Material and methods. The analysis of medical documentation of the patients reffered to the Department of Children's Otolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics in Łódź for the readenoidectomy in the years 2007-2009. The analysis covered the patients' current age, their age at the time of the previous operation, the results of an endoscopic and clinical otorhinolaryngological examination, as well as basic laboratory tests and — in a few cases — X-ray of the nasopharynx and CT scans of paranasal sinuses. Results. 37 ouf of 42 children directed to the hospital underwent the readenoidectomy (mean age - 8, mean age atthe time of primary adenotomy - 4). In a significant number of the children (67.5%) the anatomical malformation in the region of the nose and paranasal sinuses was noted. In 64.8% - chronic tonsillitis, in 32% - allergic disease, and in 40% - hypoacusis were diagnosed. Endoscopic examinations of the nose andnasopharynx were reported to play a predominant role in assessing adenoid tissue debris. Conclusions. Children referred to readenoidectomy should be carefully diagnosed for other otorhinolaryngological problems.
