- Abstract
The Tolmin Museum keeps approximately 40 exercise books from different periods. The oldest is from 1848, a few date from the pre-World War One period, but most originate from the time between the two wars and after World War Two. The school exercise books from before WW1 and after WW2 are similar to those from other Slovene areas, whilst the exercise books from between the wars, when the Primorska region belonged to Italy, are very different. In the latter we can see the glorification and imposition of the Italian culture and the gradual abolition of the Slovene language, which after the Gentile reform completely disappeared from Primorska schools. The exercise books kept by the Tolmin Museum also reflect other aspects of what was happening in society at that time. They bear witness to the publishing activities and design trends, the everyday life of the people using them and to significant events, whilst on their covers and on the paper they are wrapped in we can find various advertisements, witty comments, drawings and other interesting details.
