- Abstract
The speech "Considering Regional Exceptionalism: The Case of the Ghost of the Ozarks," by historian Brook Blevins, is presented. The article discusses the media storm that surrounded the trial of five men for the murder of farmhand Connie Franklin in Stone County, Arkansas, with focus given to the way in which journalists and newspapers depicted the rural nature and poverty of the Ozark Mountains region. Blevins explains how the Ozarks have been depicted as exceptional, exotic, and dangerous throughout history, with focus given to the work of folklorist Vance Randolph.
