The article presents information on the evolution of teeth from the perspective of palaeontology. The ostracoderms of the Upper Silurian and Devonian periods are cited as the earliest precursors of human teeth for which fossil evidence survives. Successive stages of evolution up to the evolution of marsupials are described.
