Abstract

The essay describes the role of the worship places belonging to the ecclesiastical institutions of the Catholic Church in the Italian legislation on protection of cultural heritage. This legislation is examined in its historical development up to its current structure, also taking into account the relations between the State and the Catholic Church. State artistic protection has not affected the cult function of the churches. The agreement of 1984 has promoted collaboration between the State and the Catholic Church for the protection of cultural heritage with religious interest. Collaboration is necessary and has actually been achieved for the maintenance costs of worship places.
