- Abstract
The article discusses the deportation of U.S. permanent legal residents who are not U.S. citizens after their release from U.S. prisons. The situations of three women ex-prisoners who were deported to Cambodia, Veasna Sany, Gnan "Mikki" Kroeung, and "Pich," are discussed. Other topics include the impact of the 1996 U.S. law Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act on deportations from the U.S., criticism of the policy by the nonprofit group Human Rights Watch, and problems in the resettlement of Cambodian refugees in the U.S. The experience of culture shock in deportees who have not previous been to Cambodia is noted.
