HIV: SIV emerges to cause AIDS in African monkeys.
- Authors
Jones, Susan
- Abstract
The article focuses on the emergence of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in human population after exposure to humans adapted to yield HIV-1. The researchers found out that the cross-species transmission of SIVs generated three HIV-1 groups. However, only one of these groups caused AIDS pandemic. In fact, the variant SIVs infect more than 35 non-human primate hosts in Africa. This implies that understanding the transmission is central for risk assessment to human health.
