- Abstract
The article explores the shipwreck of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in American popular culture. The freighter plied the waters of the Great Lakes and sank during a storm on November 10, 1975 with the loss of her entire crew. The ballad entitled “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” by Gordon Lightfoot became popular song. Images of the ship are used to promote sales of the beer Edmund Fitzgerald produced by the Great Lakes Brewing Co. The shipwreck is remembered in numerous history books, television documentaries including History Channel’s "Deep Sea Detectives," and various websites. The reasons behind the popular fascination with the shipwreck are explored.
