- Title
"THE COST AND EFFICIENCY OF DISTRIBUTION IN THE SOVIET UNION": REPLY.
- Authors
Goldman, Marshall I.
- Abstract
The article presents replies to a comment made by Myron Ross on the article of Marshall I. Goldman "The Cost and Efficiency of Distribution in the Soviet Union" published in the August 1962 issue of the "Quarterly Journal of Economics." It informs that Ross demonstrates the hazards of applying Western marketing analysis to the Soviet Union when one is unfamiliar with the Soviet economic system and its statistical resources. It must be remembered that the state owns virtually all retail outlets as well as all production facilities in the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the Soviet Union has a densely concentrated urban population and a retail sales volume second only to that of the United States. Thus Ross's statement that the Russians have not had access to distribution or production economies of scale because of the size of their market is inaccurate. Most Soviet urban stores have long had crowds of customers, and sales volumes that would do credit to Sears Roebuck and the A. & P.
