- Authors
Maxwell, James A.; Balcom, Margaret N.
- Abstract
The article introduces the topic on the gasoline shortage in the U.S. and its impact on the country's economy. The rapid fall of petroleum stocks in the East was brought upon by diversion of ocean tankers to the national defense program and sinking by German submarines. All seventeen states of the East Coat area, District I, were designated by the Petroleum Administration for War and consumed 1,500,000 barrels of petroleum and petroleum products daily which is 40 percent of the total consumption of the country. Railway tankcar and the pipeline usage was increased in the transportation of oil but was not sufficient to counteract the shortage.
