- Abstract
Bruxism is a term used to describe the phenomenon of grinding or clenching the teeth, which can occur due to different causes, and because of these different methods of treatment are necessary. To help the patient's diagnosis, using a classification system makes it easier to understand the clinical picture and thus facilitates its treatment. Therefore, this work aims to review the different classification systems and how it can contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of this habit. Portuguese and English articles published between 1980 and 2021 were searched. Bruxism is classified according to emotional etiology, jaw position, circadian rhythm and intensity or severity, bruxism of various severities has been reported, form and duration of treatment should vary from person to person based on the severity of the behavior. Thus, occlusal, psychological, behavioral and psychiatric techniques can be used for different individuals, depending on the diagnosis and etiology, the different classifications of bruxism indicate that there are multiple etiologies, and the form of treatment must be adapted on a caseby-case basis.
