- Title
"One Should Be One of the Best": Isabel Archer's Theory of Election.
- Authors
Houser, Julia
- Abstract
This essay argues that among Isabel Archer's "many theories," the one that dominates her consciousness is a "theory of election," an elitist, fatalistic worldview Henry James borrowed from the Protestant doctrines of election and predestination. It is a theory founded on the premise that one must be destined to be "one of the best," or else life is not worth living, and that her actions will show if she is so destined. The essay also questions some previous readings that have connected Isabel with Protestantism, proposing that these may be less true to her character and story than the one presented here.
