- Abstract
Low liquid limit silty clay is a kind of unfavorable soil in engineering, which has the characteristics of low strength, poor water stability and freeze-thaw sensitivity. The traditional methods of soil stability analysis are mostly based on the theory of saturated soil strength, however most of the soil is in the unsaturated zone, the effect of matrix suction cannot be ignored. In order to study the soil-water characteristics of lowliquid limit silty clay in Yili, Xinjiang, the matrix suction under different water contents was measured by the pressure plate method, and the curve between the matrix suction and the water content was drawn. The Gardner model and the V-G model were used to carry out fit and analyze its fitting accuracy. The results show that: ① the soil-water characteristic curve is composed of a flat section and a descending section, and the matrix suction in the descending section has a significant effect on the properties of unsaturated soil; ② the mass water content gradually decreases with the increase of the matrix suction; ③ through the V-G model compared with the Gardner model, it is found that the V-G model has better consistency with the test. Using the formula fitted by the V-G model, the matrix suction can be quickly calculated by using the mass water content.
